WE'RE CLOSING! It has been great, but Lumos Apothecary will close its doors on 5th April 2024.

Say Hello To The February Subscription Box

Lumos Apothecary proudly presents...

“A Rose By Any Other Name...”

The red rose's association with love dates back to Greek mythology and the belief that the red rose was created by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Each February we celebrate Valentines Day. A day synonymous with the giving and receiving of a red rose. We wanted to mirror this gesture in this months subscription box with our 'Rose Absolute' candle.

This is the only romance reference you'll find in this blog post as we introduce you to some of the historical links to our dear 'St Valentine'.

Origins Of Valentines Day

Many believe that Valentine’s Day is named so because of St Valentine, a beloved martyr who was executed in ancient Rome on 14th February in the 3rd Century AD. It's worth nothing that there were actually several men celebrated by the Catholic Church as St Valentine, all of whom were executed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius II. During this time, Christians were relentlessly persecuted and the execution of religious figures known as martyrs became prevalent. The stories of religious heroism by St Valentine were honoured by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.

Who Was St Valentine?

Saint Valentine

While nobody knows who the one true St Valentine was we'd like to tell you the story of one priest named Valentinus. He was arrested and imprisoned by Emperor Claudius II for his religious beliefs. Whilst in custody he befriended one of his guards and bargained with him that if he could cure the blindness of the guards daughter then the guard would convert to Christianity. Valentinus cured the girls blindness and they fell in love. In his last letter to her, before he was executed by the Emperor, he signed the note 'Your Valentine'.
